Opening Day in St. Louis is a holiday, a right of passage and an all-around day of celebration. Where I’m from, we paint the town red, take off work and come together as a community to root on our St. Louis Cardinals. So in honor of the start of the 2016 season I’ve put together some ballpark-inspired recipes and a list of some of the best baseball movies ever made to get you into the baseball spirit!
This will be my first year in quite some time that I’m not spending the Cardinals homer opener at Busch Stadium. I’ll miss the Budweiser Clydesdales and, let’s not kid ourselves, the fresh Budweiser itself made right down the street at the Anheuser-Busch Brewery.
So in an effort to make myself feel a little bit better about missing the occasion, the National Pork Board sent me a few tasty ballpark recipes they’ve whipped up for Opening Day. I was pretty excited to get these recipes because I have quite the experience under my belt when it comes to sampling ballpark food. Heck, I’ve even covered a hot dog eating contest at Busch Stadium.
I recently participated in the Pork Board’s Opening Day survey, where I told them my favorite ballpark food is loaded nachos and that my hometown team is known for its beer (come on guys, the park is named ‘Busch Stadium’).
Prepare yourself, because they sent me these glorious recipes and I’m really excited to try the nacho pork tenderloin!
- Ballpark Pork Gyro with Peppers and Onions – make pork your new hometown gyro with this mashup featuring thinly sliced pork loin, onions and peppers all wrapped in a warm pita for easy game-time eating.
- Pork Kebab Dog with Spicy Pickle Relish – bench your hot dog for this kebab dog, featuring grilled pork ground skewers in a soft bun, its out-of-the-park good.
- Nacho-Crusted Pork Tenderloin with Pico de Gallo and Nacho Sauce – this grand-slam recipe is nacho regular pork tenderloin. Made with homemade nacho cheese and fresh Pico de Gallo, you will be craving a double-hitter with these.
- Buffalo Pork Ribs – sizzling, juicy ribs marinated in your favorite buffalo flavor makes this recipe a staple at any game-day event.
And if that didn’t get your mouth watering enough, feast your eyes on this tasty-looking video they sent me too. (Man I’m really, really hungry now)
But you obviously need something to watch while you eat these tasty foods leading up to your team’s season opener or when you aren’t watching baseball this season. The folks at Redbox sent me this list of the best baseball movies:
- A League Of Their Own
- Bad News Bears
- Bull Durham
- Eight Men Out
- Field of Dreams
- Major League
- Pride of the Yankees
- The Natural
- The Sandlot
I like this list, but think there may be a few of my childhood favorites missing. I visited this topic back in February with sports writer Jonah Keri when he put together his very own Sports Oscars. I called him out, as well, on not having Angels in the Outfield or Rookie of the Year. Classics!
If you haven’t figured it out, baseball is back and I’m excited! I hope you make Opening Day your very own holiday as well 🙂
