Sometimes it’s okay to have a ‘do nothing day.’ As a person who is constantly go, go, go, it’s sometimes hard for me to squeeze in a day where I don’t do a whole lot. We all need those days, and it’s OK to take them.

Maybe it’s my personality or maybe it’s my work ethic, but I always feel like I should be doing something, seeing someone or accomplishing at task. When you pack your schedule week-in and week-out, you need to allow yourself to stop, sit back, watch a movie and do nothing.

In an age where social media shows the highlights of people that are up to something fun, new and exciting, we sometimes feel pressure to go out, share our fun experiences and keep pushing forward. You can still do all that and take those ‘lazy days.’ And let’s be honest, on social media those are just highlights and snapshots, not always reality.

We all need to allow ourselves the time to stop, let loose, step away from work, email and the Internet and unwind, even if it’s just for a little while.

I am lucky that I have a support system that tells me to chill and maybe scale it back a bit. My parents, in particular, sometimes have to ask me if I need to do that, if I can take a day for myself or say, “Hey, you are going to be going non-stop for two weeks straight, do you really need to do that? Maybe you should just chill.”

Today, was one of those days that I needed to do that. I had alternate plans but decided that I needed to adjust and take a day for myself. Today I:

  • slept in
  • ate breakfast
  • went to the grocery store
  • started to hang up the rest of the photos/decorations that I still had in a box from the move
  • made a good lunch
  • finished hanging those decorations
  • did some laundry, while I…
  • checked important and urgent emails only
  • took a nap
  • did yoga, Pilates and hopped on the elliptical to watch a short documentary about golf in the Olympics
  • chilled in the pool
  • did a radio interview
  • made a good dinner
  • wrote this blog post on my couch with a glass of wine

That seems like a long list at first, but if you think about all of the things you may do in a typical day, this is a pretty light day — where I allowed myself to relax, do exactly what I want to do and still feel like I accomplished a little bit.

So remember to allow yourself those days, especially if you know you have a stretch coming up that you won’t get a break. It is OK to ‘do nothing.’
